new jersey. so to chris christie congratulations you got things done. brought to you by granger, call click on granger.com or stop by one of their branches. granger for the ones that get things done. peter before we get back to the campaign, this other issue we have had running throughout the morning is a big question. it stirred up a lot of debate last night -- or the last few days in new york. brian williams was really critical of new york city and the mayor, for allowing the new york marathon to go forward as scheduled on sunday even though half of manhattan is without power, and a lot of people are still hurting. >> the race starts in statton island, and goes through all

five burrows. you look at the surrounding areas, statton island -- >> statton island is part of new york city? >> no, but the other boroughs is what i mean. >> bill: it was not only forgotten, it was hammered. the residents were screaming yesterday saying hey, what about us. >> yeah, kathy webb says focus on the marathon puts focus on the 1% not the 99%. very funny comment on twitter from cy guy, who says they should postpone the new york city marathon until wednesday november 7th by then paul ryan will be unemployed and he can run the race. ben white said if i still lived

in stat on the island and saw all of these joggers bussed in, i would go insane. they have the transportation to take the joggers and runners to statton island and yet there are still people trapped there and can't get out. >> bill: and by the way, have you seen the lines for buses in new york? >> yeah. >> bill: maybe if they have all of those extra buses they should use some of those extra buses on the streets of new york to move people around. >> yeah. >> bill: you know, michael bloomberg shows a lot of leadership in a lot of areas, i think on this one he lost it. though leadership on this one would have been to say there are more important things right now than a marathon and we're just going to delay it a week or maybe two weeks. no, bfd, right?

check it out at our president and billpressshow.com. the president will be racing from battleground state to battleground state today, tomorrow, saturday, sunday monday, and then ends up in chicago along with him as part of the press pool right down to the very end margaret who covers the white house for him for bloomberg news. good morning. >> good morning. >> bill: have you got your bags packed? >> yeah, i can throw it together pretty quick. it got so crazy for the last month and a half. >> bill: exactly. so the big news today is mayor bloomberg's endorsement, especially because he has been so grumpy about both of them saying they won't do anything about gun control or climate change, why did he change his mind? now he came out yesterday and endorsed president obama.

>> yes, of course he had endorsed george bush four years before the last election. but there were a number of factors, but lead with climate change and that sandy has solidified or raised the stakes in the whole deal. he contrasted the two candidates, about their concerned levels on climate change. but then he called out a number of other things as well. largely social policies education, health care same-sex marriage, women's abortion rights, and so that's the case that he made. >> bill: a significant endorsement, i think. >> although he said -- two things that were interesting, number one that he might well have endorsed romney if it had been the mitt romney who had

been governor of massachusetts. >> bill: because he is governor of massachusetts, for example, he banned assault weapons. >> okay. >> bill: right? >> yeah, but his point was -- he said it was a different candidate. >> bill: now he is for assault weapons so go figure. >> he also said he had been really disappointed in the last four years. he wasn't saying president obama had been the best president ever, but he said pressed to choose, president obama has come down on the right side of his mind. >> i'll take the endorsement. >> bill: yes. we know the big news about hurricane sandy is the biggest news we have had but hitting a week before the campaign there

is also a political side to hurricane sandy. looking at bloomberg's endorsement, wouldn't you have to say if there were a political winner it was president obama. >> no question. you have chris christie who has been a top surrogate for romney on the tarmac shaking hands, praising the president for his response efforts -- >> bill: over and over. >> but more than the words was what the storm did to the narrative, which was to stop the campaign in its track, and stop the perception of romney momentum, to shift the focus from romney's rallies, and shift the discussion to what roll the

government can play. >> bill: hey, dan, i want to share with margaret the newest obama ad but while dan is getting that ready -- that's the point of my column i reference is that i think hurricane sandy brought the focus on the key difference between romney and president obama, and there are certain cases where federal government has a real role to play -- >> almost every case come on bill. >> bill: but romney does say the more we can give to the states and the more we can give to the private sector the better including natural disasters. >> you didn't hear him say that this week. >> bill: no. i don't know if you have heard this or not. >> the president himself and fema administrator have been out

standing with us so far. very proactive, and i appreciate that type of leadership and the president's telephone call and if we do need something, i have the number and i'll be able to use it. >> obama: i'm barack obama and i approve this message. [ laughter ] >> bill: that's our own creation, of course, but it gets the point across. >> it's free media, that's right. >> the daily show has a great comparison of chris christie a week before the storm hit -- and the exact opposite of what he just said, barack obama can't find leadership, he doesn't know how to lead, he wouldn't know how to find a light switch in the room, and as jon stewart pointed out, he found that f-ing

light switch. >> yeah, governor christie is not only a governor, but the governor of a democratic state, and what were his options anyway? what was he going to do criticize president obama when he responded so well -- >> bill: then obama would say, i guess we'll give that money to connecticut instead. [ laughter ] >> well, of course not, but christie was acting like a governor that made the calculation if there was a way he had to be this was the way. either way it didn't help romney. >> bill: not at all. we just talked to congressman gary peters representing the very district where this chrysler jeep plant is located in toledo and the romney campaign is certainly implying

that as a result of the bailout, chrysler's plans are to move the jeep plant to china. gary peters has said it is totally untrue along with a lot of other people. can romney get away with that? >> this has turned into the 11th-hour ad wars but the most interesting has been what is playing out in ohio right now. it's almost not even the bailout it is the notion of job outsourcing to china. >> bill: but if you say that they are planning on moving a plant to china and the head of the company comes out and says you are lying -- >> that's really a problem for them. and the obama has calculated that not just one, but two separate ads that they are doing

to counter that. that their calculation has been that romney's play will backfire in ohio concentrated in northeastern ohio -- this is one out of eight jobs and their calculation is that people employed directly or indirectly by the industry feel the auto bailout was good from them. >> bill: we talked so some people from ohio -- they are getting calls to their congressional office saying i work for this chrysler -- is my job going to be gone? you know or they are calling the chrysler leadership saying are you closing down this plant? >> i don't mean to take the cup out, we'll know on tuesday, right, whether or not i worked in ohio, but this play for the hearts and minds of auto workers

has been the central play in ohio. it's really not just workers but auto workers and industry workers -- what the obama surrogate said yesterday, and what they both said was, they think this is going to be back fire. on the other hand if the obama campaign wasn't worried about it, they wouldn't have top surrogates in both states doing phone calls with reporters. >> bill: true. true. when you look back margaret and we remember when the president did the auto bailout, you wouldn't think it may turn out to be the most important thing he did as president in terms of securing a second term. >> yeah. >> bill: when we come back i want to ask you, we are less than an hour from the next jobs

bunch of generators waiting to fire up for the marathon. and then dick cheeseburger said it is dumb to hold the marathon amid this destruction. >> bill: if there's image of marathoners running by like breezy point long island where they lost 110 or 111 homes -- >> and it starts in statton island. >> they postponed halloween in new jersey. the president canceled halloween at the white house. at the very least there will be political repercussions to consider, right? >> bill: for bloomberg. >> the first picture of a runner in $300 running shoes, and an expensive outfit running by a destroyed house, forget it. >> but there may be -- in real

times, not that much of a down side of it but perception matters too. and it's hard. >> bill: margaret i do want to apologize -- or clarify maybe something -- you do work for bloomberg, but you don't work for the bloomberg. >> right. >> bill: when i ask you about the mayor, he has no connection -- >> to the news story. >> bill: all right. jobs report coming up. we never know what it is going to say. the republicans tried to accuse the president of a conspiracy. the jobs report is going to come out. we don't know what it is going to say. but what impact could it have? >> the median bloomberg survey that we always do the jobs

report suggested there may be a very slight uptick in the number. at this point in the race -- >> bill: and positive job growth, probably but not overwhelming. >> i'm afraid so. and consumer confidence numbers came out, and they are quite high. the campaigns have both felt that most likely, short of some kind of insane numbers, you know, today, that the last report was the most important in terms of setting in people's understanding of the jobs numbers, unemployment rate and what it meant, and early voting as you know is increasingly important. something like one out of three people have already voted. >> bill: excellent point. >> so it's not clear that this would have a major impact.

it's a day or maybe three day's worth of message on the trail for either candidate. >> bill: what does an increase mean? it's one indicated for -- >> it is one indicator but i don't know what to tell you what it means for the election -- >> bill: i mean for the economy. >> oh, yeah that people are feeling better in terms of the economy, and in terms of the consumer they are more likely to spend more money. when they are not spending money it is not good news. >> bill: provided they have the money to spend. >> no that never stops anybody. >> bill: all right. hey, margaret good to see you.

are people exaggerating it? meantime, i mentioned the president was out on the road yesterday. first day after hurricane sandy hit the road again. he was in ohio i believe -- no wisconsin. and then he went to las vegas, and out there he talked about the message that he gave federal agencies and fema, dealing with the victims of hurricane sandy. >> obama: the thing i have repeated to them is america will not forget them. we're going to make sure they get everything they need. we're going to cut through the red tape and bureaucracy. >> bill: the president gave them the rule you get a call from one of these governors, turn the call in 15 minutes. >> that's a good rule for all

shelton dominating last night winning three trophies including entertainer of the year. taylor swift who won entertainer of the year last year, came away completely empty handed, album of the year went to eric church for his album "cheap." >> bill: all right. dan, thank you. okay. yesterday when mayor bloomberg endorsed president obama he said he saw the leadership the president demonstrated in dealing with hurricane sandy. he knows he is a strong believer in how serious climate change is as an issue, and he is the one you can count on to do something about it in the second term. governor andrew cuomo mentioned

the same issue. here he is. >> i think part of learning from this is the recognition that climate change is a reality, extreme weather is a reality. >> bill: just playing devil's advocate, joe. we have always had hurricanes so are people just trying to make this an issue or is climate change really involved here? >> i think there's no question climate change is is involved. and the planet is warming, oceans expand, and as the oceans get warmer, there's more water vapor in the atmosphere and that gets swept into these big

superstorms, and last year out was hurricane irene. and a lot of meteorologists believe that the climate change is really making a fundamental shift to energizing superstorms. for instance, why did this storm veer left into new jersey rather than go out to sea which is what storms like this normally do and the answer is there was this huge high pressure system blocking it in the north atlantic, and there is recent studies that suggest that global warming makes those pressure systems stronger. the arctic is warming, you know, much faster than the rest of the world. >> bill: so in light of global warming, are we more -- are we going to see more and more of these big storms like this, with this devastating impact?

is that what meteorologists are telling us? >> yeah, there's no question. we'll see obviously more intense heat waves -- >> bill: which we saw this year. >> which we saw this year. and when it is hotter it is dryer because the heat dries up the land. and we had the worst drought in three generations, and if you dry things up, you are going to get more fires, and so have had more fires. and the superstorm. carbon pollution is like a baseball player on steroids and you don't say one home run is caused the steroids, but the home runs get longer, and suddenly you realize you are breaking all sorts of records and that's what we're doing with the weather. >> bill: i want to come back to the surge, right? and even -- not just in storm

times, but the rise in sea levels -- how do i want to ask this question? i guess -- i didn't realize, for example, that new york is such a low-lying area but it is. you go to battery park and there is not a lot of spare room there, right -- >> no. >> bill: and so it really -- doesn't it show how at risk so many cities along the eastern seaboard are? >> absolutely. i think that we have built so much valuable property around the concept of stability in the climate system, and yeah, the sea levels are rising and by the way a study came out that said sea levels are rising four times faster in the northeast than in other parts of the world. so yeah, we're projected to see

maybe one to two feet sea level rise by mid-sentry and four five, or six and that's assuming we're dumb enough to keep doing nothing. >> bill: but one to two feet. there are search settled communities right now which will not be livable right? >> not without spending a great deal of money to put up barriers. but once you are under sea level, you can put up a barrier but when the storm surge comes, ten feet, you spend a certain amount of money to protect against sea level, how much are you going to spend to protect against the once in a hundred year storm. and we're seeing that every other year now. so it makes planning very expensive, which is why an ounce

of prevention is worth a pound of cure. >> bill: so we know that president obama wanted to do something, this congress is not willing to do anything at all about climate change not that the president has pushed as hard as he should have, in my opinion. we have talked about that. but if he were to pass a carbon tax right now, for this country alone, can we reverse the tide? i mean is it too late? i mean can we stop -- you know these disastrous impacts that we -- that climateologists predict. >> i think people should know we are stuck with a certain amount of warming. the hope is if we acted aggressively now as the leader of the world, we could get a

global -- >> bill: slow it down or reverse the trend. >> yeah, the goal would be to limit it to 3.5, 4 degrees farenheit, rather than 10 degrees fahrenheit. so we have our -- you know we have our control over avoiding the worst. >> bill: we said this -- we're talking to joe romm editor of theprogress, you have your own site too? >> climateprogress, but it's part of theprogress.org. >> bill: okay. we were talking about the drought, heat wave and other

events, and now hurricane sandy. what is going to get to get congress to act? >> i think this has been a wake-up call. mayor bloomberg as you said made climate change front and center. he said if this were the romney of 2003 i might have sup porteded him but now he is against intelligent climate policies, and against a clean energy tax credit so that's a big deal. the fact that the governor of new york, cuomo has raised it, and you are saying nbc and abc, and the major networks starting to talk about it. so i'm hoping that this is a tipping point. because we don't want sandy to be start for cassandra another warning that we ignore. >> bill: very good. what do you think? is now the time?

solution, or do we know what to do? >> i think we know what to do. i worked for five years at the department of energy, so we have the technologies solar, wind energy efficiency more fuel efficiency, and obama has been doing some of it. he has been pushing the fuel efficiency very hard. >> bill: and what about existing fossil fuel plants? >> well you are going to have to over time figure out how to capture the carbon pollution, or just replacement with clean energy. >> bill: so cap and trade or carbon tax? >> i don't think we're going to see cap and trade, but i think there is a window of opportunity for a carbon tax to make polluters pay.

somebody -- there is going to be revenues in it. >> bill: from somewhere. >> somewhere. and it's certainly better to put a tax solution than to tax labor, so i think people have talked about a possibility of getting a carbon tax there even using it to help lower the corporate income tax rate so i think now is the time to really push for this. >> bill: and it's not going to happen unless people really mad and demand it and say, listen let's get serious about climate change, and it could be that hurricane sandy -- we'll look back and say that was the tipping point. that was the turning point? and congress responded. we thank you for all of the work you have done on this issue. and thanks for coming in this morning. >> thanks for having me. >> announcer: this is the "bill press show." ♪

months of positive job growth. that's more than 5.1 million jobs that have been added during that time. and look we're not where we want to end up, but we're on the road to recovery and moving this economy forward by strengthening it from the middle class out. and i think that's what this report demonstrates. we can't get there overnight. we didn't get into it overnight, and we're not going to get out of it overnight. but this is a good step on the road to recovery. >> bill: and when you add to that consumer confidence the highest it has been in the last four years, 32-consecutive months of positive job growth. it sort of takes the wind out of the sales of the romney administration that this economy is in the toilet.

>> these guys would love to talk down the economy and tell you things are a lot worse than they really are, what they -- and here is worst of all. they want to go back to the same policies that got us into this mess. that's the biggest hoodwink of all. they want to go back to the same tax cuts for the wealthy showered on them, even though they are doing great, hoping that will trickle down to folks in the middle class. that's what got us into this mess, and what we spent four years digging ourselves out of. we can't go back to the same policies that we had under president bush. >> bill: yeah. almost every one of my liberal, democratic friends i talked to say, i'm really nervous i'm really nervous about tuesday. you must hear that too. what do you tell people? >> i think a little nervousness

is okay. because what i want us to do is -- look we remember 2000? right? we lost florida by about 534 votes. 534 nervous people would have called 534 other nervous people, we would have had a different outcome, so let's use that anxiousness, energy and nervousness to get out there and knock on doors -- speaking about this morning as i was listening to the radio this daylight savingings, you get an extra hour use that extra hour to contact people and get on facebook and tell them why it's important to vote. if you have friends in the swing states call them up and make shire they are exercising their right to boat.

the best thing is let's not feel anxious on wednesday. >> bill: yeah. >> let's feel good on wednesday because we felt anxious now and that spurred us into action. >> bill: when you look at the battleground -- i know we are not -- nothing is in the bag, and we're not taking anything for granted, but when you look at particularly the battleground states, what is your level of confidence? >> i feel pretty good about where we are right now but as you said it's really who shows up at the polls. it's all about turnout now. so i feel like we're in a good position to win this race if we close the deal and do what we need to do over the course of the next several days to get our folks to the polls. the nine battleground states look, we have a chance to win all nine of them but, look, we got to get out there and make

sure we're doing each and every thing, to do what we need to do each and every day over the next few days, and if we do that we're going to feel really good looking at that map tuesday night. >> bill: yes the president is hitting every one of those battleground states and hitting ohio two or three times. we're talking with robert gibbs. you mentioned ohio robert. the big issue in ohio has been this ad, and then a second ad that mitt romney has put out there saying hey i'm the guy who is going to save the auto industry, barack obama isn't. he is moving jobs to china. >> this is the most shameless,

disenagainous dishonest political ad that i have ever seen in all of my years. when it came to stepping up to save chrysler and general motors. barack obama bet on the workers there, and mitt romney said let them and detroit go bankrupt. and i sat in a lot of those auto recovery meetings, and i was in the last meeting where the president had to make some really tough decisions. and when it came to chrysler and jeep, he had a lot of questions. six or seven things needed to happen to make sure that that company got what it needed to get up off of the mat, and the president said if we get all of those six things right what are the chances that chrysler survived. and they said 51-49, and the

president said i'm going to bet on them, on chrysler and those workers. chrysler has paid their loan back six years early. >> bill: yep. >> we're not shipping jobs to china to build jeeps, we're adding jobs in this country and ohio to build jeeps. and you don't need to look any further than the press in ohio's reaction to this ad. they call it insulting. they are trying to scare people that somehow we're shipping jobs overseas to china we're going to stop building jeeps in america and build jeeps only in china. i is a disenginous lie. mitt romney thinks that he can insult and lie his way to winning a state, and i have news

for mitt romney and paul ryan the people of ohio are a whole lot smarter than you would give them credit card for. they're not going to fall for your phony baloney ads. their jobs are safe and secure right in america, right in ohio and if it were up to mitt romney, there wouldn't be a chrysler or jeep. if he wanted to see a jeep we would have to see one who thought one several years ago. barack obama didn't think to see a jeep we ought to visit a car museum, we ought to visit our local jeep dealer. >> bill: and finally, mayor bloomberg's endorsement pretty big cue at the end, right? >> absolutely. mayor bloomberg and lots of other folks across the country and quite frankly across the world are concerned about the

change in our climate. and look you know, it's a big part of -- of the president's unfinished agenda. we have got to create a clean energy economy, provide incentives to make sure that we're not just looking at the same-old source of energy. and we're reducing our carbon footprint and making sure that -- that we're really investing in the energy sources of tomorrow, and look i think if you look over the last few days, colin powell said he is for barack obama, mike bloomberg said he is for barack obama, and chris christie had great things to say about what the president has been doing in new jersey. so i think that's a pretty darn good way to end the campaign. all three of these gentlemen

when the nation was crying out for leadership, said bloomberg. and not only that, bloomberg noted that obama alone realizes the importance of climate change that climate change is one of the causes of sandy's powerful punch, and unlike mitt romney president obama is committed to doing something about climate change in his second term. good for michael bloomberg. it is an issue that the united states must take the lead on, and president obama will show that leadership in his second term. that's it for this week folks. get out and call your friends and knock on doors, and we'll come back and talk about it on monday.
